5 Weight Loss Mistakes
(And What to Do Instead).

If you have been trying to lose weight and nothing seems to work, you are probably making at least one of these mistakes. Here is what to do differently.

Weight loss is the number one goal people come to us with at R&B Fitness in Bedford. And nearly every time, they have already tried losing weight on their own. They have done the diets, the cardio, the calorie counting apps. Some of them have lost weight before, only to put it all back on. The frustration is real.

After coaching hundreds of people through successful body transformations, we have seen the same five mistakes come up again and again. If you can fix these, everything changes.

Mistake 1: Only Doing Cardio

This is the big one. When most people decide to lose weight, they head straight for the treadmill or the cross-trainer. They do 45 minutes of steady-state cardio, three or four times a week, and wait for the results.

The problem is that cardio alone is a terrible way to change your body composition. Yes, you burn calories during the session. But the moment you step off the treadmill, that calorie burn drops back to baseline. Worse, if cardio is all you do, you will lose muscle alongside fat, which lowers your metabolic rate and makes it harder to keep the weight off long-term.

What to do instead: Prioritise strength training. When you build muscle, your body burns more calories at rest. That means you are burning more even when you are sitting on the sofa. At R&B Fitness, our weight loss programmes are built around structured strength training with conditioning work added on top, not the other way around.

Mistake 2: Not Tracking Body Composition

Most people trying to lose weight rely entirely on bathroom scales. The problem? Scales do not tell you what you are actually losing. If you lose 5kg but 3kg of that is muscle, you have not improved your body composition at all. You have just become a smaller, softer version of yourself.

This is also why the scales sometimes do not move even when you are clearly looking and feeling better. You could be gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time, which is the best possible outcome, but the scales show zero change. Without proper tracking, you might give up on something that is actually working.

What to do instead: Track your body composition, not just your weight. At R&B Fitness, we use InBody body composition scanning to measure muscle mass, body fat percentage, visceral fat, and hydration levels. This shows you exactly what is changing and removes the guesswork entirely. It is one of the most powerful tools we have for keeping clients motivated and on track.

Mistake 3: Crash Dieting

Cutting your calories dramatically might produce fast results on the scales, but it is setting you up for failure. When you eat too little, your body responds by slowing your metabolism, breaking down muscle for energy, and increasing hunger hormones. The moment you go back to eating normally, the weight comes back, often with interest.

This yo-yo pattern is incredibly common. We have had clients at R&B Fitness who have lost and regained the same two stone three or four times before finding us. Every cycle makes it harder the next time because you have less muscle and a slower metabolism to work with.

What to do instead: Eat in a moderate calorie deficit that you can sustain. Focus on getting enough protein (most people need far more than they think), eating whole foods, and making changes you can maintain for months, not weeks. Our nutrition coaching at R&B Fitness gives every member personalised macro targets that adapt based on their training, activity levels, and progress. No meal plans. No food rules. Just a framework you can actually live with.

Mistake 4: No Accountability

This one is less glamorous but it might be the most important. Going to the gym on your own requires discipline, and discipline runs out. When nobody is expecting you to turn up, it is easy to skip sessions. When nobody is checking your food diary, it is easy to let standards slip. When nobody is measuring your progress, it is easy to lose motivation.

Accountability is not about someone shouting at you. It is about having a system and a person who keeps you honest and catches problems early before they snowball.

What to do instead: Train in an environment where someone is tracking your progress and holding you to account. At R&B Fitness, your coach logs every session, reviews your check-ins, monitors your body composition data, and follows up if you miss sessions. You are not a membership number. You are a real person with a coach who knows your name, your goals, and your tendencies. That level of accountability is what turns good intentions into lasting results.

Mistake 5: Following Generic Programmes

The internet is full of free workout plans. Download a 12-week shred programme, follow it to the letter, and get the body you want. That is the promise, anyway.

The reality is that generic programmes are written for nobody in particular. They do not account for your injuries, your training history, your work schedule, your stress levels, or the equipment you have access to. They cannot adapt when something is not working. And they certainly cannot spot that your squat technique is going to cause a knee injury before it happens.

What to do instead: Get a programme written specifically for you by someone who knows what they are doing. Every member at R&B Fitness receives a fully bespoke programme that is updated every four weeks based on their progress, feedback, and body composition data. Two people with the same weight loss goal might be doing completely different exercises because their bodies, histories, and limitations are different. That is what personal training actually means.

The Bottom Line

Weight loss is not complicated, but it does require the right approach. Strength training over cardio. Body composition tracking over bathroom scales. Sustainable nutrition over crash diets. Real accountability over going it alone. Bespoke programming over generic plans.
