5 to 1 personal training is a small group training model where a maximum of five clients work with one qualified coach. Unlike a gym class where everyone follows the same workout, each person in a 5 to 1 session has their own individually written programme. The coach supervises the entire session, correcting form, adjusting intensity, and making sure every rep counts.
It is the middle ground between expensive one-to-one personal training and unsupervised gym memberships. You get the bespoke programming and hands-on coaching of 1-to-1, but at a fraction of the cost because you share your session with up to four other people.
How It Compares to Other Options
To understand why 5 to 1 works so well, it helps to compare it with the other options available in Bedford.
| Feature | Commercial Gym | Gym Class | 1-to-1 PT | 5 to 1 PT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bespoke programme | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Form coaching | No | Limited | Yes | Yes |
| Coach knows your name | No | Unlikely | Yes | Yes |
| Progress tracking | Self-managed | No | Yes | Yes |
| Adapts to injuries | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Cost per month | £15 to £30 | £40 to £80 | £200 to £400+ | From ~£100 |
| Community/energy | Variable | High | Low | High |
The key takeaway is that 5 to 1 delivers almost everything 1-to-1 delivers, with the added benefit of training alongside other people. Most of our members at R&B Fitness say the energy of a shared session pushes them harder than they would go alone.
Why the Ratio Matters
Not all small group training is equal. Some gyms run "small group" sessions with 8, 10, or even 12 people per coach. At that point, the coach physically cannot give everyone individual attention. They might catch a few form mistakes, but they certainly are not adapting your programme mid-session or watching your technique on every set.
Five is the number where personal training stays personal. With five people maximum, your coach has enough capacity to give each person genuine one-to-one moments throughout the session. They can watch your deadlift technique, swap an exercise if something is bothering your shoulder, and push you to add weight when they can see you are ready.
At R&B Fitness, the 5:1 cap is non-negotiable. We do not squeeze in a sixth person because a session is popular. If a slot is full, it is full. That commitment to the ratio is what protects the quality of coaching.
What a Typical 5 to 1 Session Looks Like
Every session at R&B Fitness follows a structured format, but the exercises within that format are unique to each person.
Warm-up: Your coach takes you through a warm-up tailored to what you are training that day. If you are doing lower body work, your warm-up will focus on hip mobility, glute activation, and movement prep for your main lifts.
Three supersets: The main body of the session is built around three supersets. Each superset pairs two exercises together, typically a compound movement (like a squat, deadlift, bench press, or row) with a core or accessory exercise. You complete all sets of the first superset before moving on to the second. Your coach watches your form throughout and adjusts weights, tempo, or exercise variations as needed.
Conditioning finisher: After the three supersets, you finish with individual conditioning work. This could be anything from sled pushes to rowing intervals to loaded carries, depending on your fitness level and goals. Beginners might do something low-impact. More advanced members might do something that leaves them on the floor. Everyone finishes at the same time, but the work is scaled to the individual.
Session duration: Most sessions run for around 45 to 60 minutes. That is enough time to do meaningful work without dragging out the session unnecessarily.
Who Is 5 to 1 For?
Honestly, almost everyone. We have complete beginners training alongside people who have been lifting for years, and the format works for both because everyone has their own programme.
- Beginners who want to learn how to train properly with expert guidance from day one
- People who have trained in commercial gyms but hit a plateau and want real coaching
- Anyone who finds 1-to-1 PT too expensive but still wants the bespoke programme and hands-on coaching
- People with injuries or health conditions who need their programme adapted by a qualified coach
- Anyone who trains better with other people around rather than alone or in a massive gym class
